POLE POSITION

S4: EP 10

Pole-Position.jpg

In this special episode, recorded on behalf of the Regent’s University London Alumni Club, we dive into the extraordinary worlds of motorsport and electronic music through the lens of Pole Position, the brainchild of two highly acclaimed figures in the music industry:  Loïc Le Joliff, the visionary founder of Brunch Electronik and Off Sonar, and Jaime Alguersuari, a former Red Bull F1 driver turned music producer and DJ.

The event took place at Blue Marlin Ibiza in London, a creative sanctuary that has recently expanded its cutting-edge music programming into the city, and where our host, Farah Nanji, holds a DJ residency.

Regent’s University London is one of the most respected independent universities in the UK, known for nurturing innovators, entrepreneurs, and tomorrow’s future leaders. Farah graduated with a degree in Global Business Management from Regent’s in 2014 and is proud to serve the University today as the Vice President of the Alumni Club. Regent’s University and Blue Marlin invited Pole Position to fly in from Barcelona for an exclusive panel discussion exploring the high-performance mindset, followed by DJ sets.

POLE POSITION: WHERE SPEED MEETS SOUND

In a world where both racing and music are often seen as solitary pursuits of perfection, Pole Position flips the script. Jaime and Loïc’s shared love for both Formula 1 and music sparked an instant connection when their paths crossed in Barcelona, leading to the creation of Pole Position and their record label, Ànims, which has received support from legendary artists like Dixon, Solomun, and Carl Cox.

During the discussion, Jaime and Loïc invited our audience to explore the parallels between the calculated risks of the racetrack and the artistic risks of live performance. Both demand focus, precision, and a willingness to operate on the edge. Both are underpinned by a deep understanding of timing and rhythm. And, as Jaime notes, both disciplines require the ability to tune out the pressures from the crowd to tap into their peak performance zone.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DISCIPLINE

A key theme in the conversation was the importance of discipline, a common thread throughout Jaime’s and Loïc’s careers. Jaime reflected on how the intense physical and mental demands of Formula 1 shaped his approach to music. In F1, there’s no margin for error—every lap, every decision counts. That same level of focus now drives his meticulous approach to music production and live performances.

For Loïc, success stemmed not from following trends, but from daring to be different. His Brunch Electronik series, now a cultural mainstay in Barcelona, redefined the electronic music experience, combining daytime events with a strong commitment to community and sustainability. Loïc’s approach challenges the traditional nightlife model, proving that meaningful experiences can—and should—extend far beyond the music itself.

Their stories converge on a powerful idea: that real success, whether in racing or music, comes from an unshakable commitment to self-mastery. It’s a process that demands constant evolution, embracing failure as part of growth to nurture a passion that never fades.

CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO

Beyond their individual achievements, Jaime and Loïc are driven by a desire to disrupt the norms in both industries. Loïc’s Brunch Electronik didn’t just create a space for music—it reshaped how festivals can impact their communities, integrating sustainability with entertainment. From recycling initiatives to LGBTQ+ inclusion, Loïc is spearheading a movement that encourages cultural and environmental responsibility.

Meanwhile, Jaime’s transition from the cutthroat world of Formula 1 to the equally competitive realm of electronic music asks a larger question: how do we transfer the skills, focus, and mental resilience honed in one extreme environment into another? Jaime’s journey from being one of the youngest F1 drivers in history to an artist striving for musical mastery is a testament to the idea that the pursuit of greatness transcends disciplines. It’s not about simply switching careers—it’s about transforming how we think about our passions to go beyond our limits.

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jaime for a solo episode on the podcast, which you can listen to below:
