FROM FOUNDING

PIONEERING A NEW
MUSIC ECONOMY
EELKO VAN KOOTEN
S4: EP 11

In this episode, recorded live at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE)—the world’s largest gathering for electronic music enthusiasts—we have the privilege of talking to Eelko van Kooten, a trailblazer in the music industry whose journey is marked by entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and resilience.

Spinnin' Records, founded in 1999, was where it all began. Raised in a family that helped shape the Netherlands’ music culture, Eelko’s roots in the industry run deep. His father, Willem van Kooten, was one of the Netherlands' first DJs and a music publisher, while his mother’s entrepreneurial ventures instilled in him an early understanding of business. Combining a sharp eye for talent with a passion for disruption, Eelko launched Spinnin' Records, a label that would go on to redefine dance music and was later acquired by Warner Music for $100 million.

Under Eelko’s leadership, Spinnin' Records not only launched the careers of artists like Martin Garrix and Oliver Heldens but also set a new industry standard in music marketing and digital distribution, cementing its place as a trendsetting label that consistently shaped the electronic music landscape.

BUILDING A HIT-MAKING EMPIRE
Eelko’s success wasn’t about following trends but setting them. Through relentless innovation and an instinct for what resonates globally, Spinnin' Records became a powerhouse of talent and hits. Eelko and his team were early adopters of streaming technology, harnessing it to distribute music worldwide—an adaptation that many CEOs avoided, leading to their decline. Spinnin’s bold embrace of the digital age gave it a crucial advantage, making it a key player in reshaping how electronic music was discovered and enjoyed.

Eelko shares what he believes makes a record a hit: originality, a memorable hook, and a connection with listeners that goes beyond the music. However, he also discusses how sustaining success can be more challenging than creating a hit, shedding light on the unique pressures of managing a global music empire.
THE DRIVE BEHIND COLLABHOUSE

Today, Eelko is once again innovating with Collabhouse, a platform that connects artists directly with influencers, allowing musicians to reach their audiences without traditional label constraints. Collabhouse embodies Eelko’s vision for a future where independent artists have unprecedented control and reach. By disrupting the traditional music economy, Collabhouse gives artists the freedom to grow their brands, connect with fans, and drive their careers forward.
A LEGACY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND IMPACT
Throughout this conversation, Eelko shares valuable lessons on loyalty, resilience, and leadership. Leading a team of 90 people at Spinnin' required a management style rooted in trust and empowerment, fostering a culture that nurtured talent and innovation. For Eelko, entrepreneurship extends beyond building successful companies—it’s about cultivating people and leaving a lasting impact.

For anyone aspiring to make waves in any field, Eelko’s story is a testament to the power of vision, courage, and adaptability. From growing up in a family that valued creativity to becoming a transformative figure in electronic music, Eelko van Kooten’s journey is one of constant evolution, industry disruption, and an unshakeable commitment to pushing boundaries.
